Ready to Plan a Lake Como Elopement?

If you're thinking about planning a Lake Como elopement, you've probably already discovered the obvious: almost everywhere looks impossibly beautiful.

The bigger question is: Where should you actually get married? And what time of year is best?

And then there is the question every couple eventually asks:

“But what about the crowds?”

Lake Como is one of the most sought-after destinations in Italy for intimate weddings and elopements, especially during the summer months. The famous villages and villas can become busy, and simply choosing a beautiful location doesn't automatically mean you'll have it to yourself.

That's where thoughtful planning with a trusted team makes all the difference.

When we plan a Lake Como elopement, we're not just looking for the prettiest view (although we plan to give you that too!) We're looking at privacy, light, timing, access, weather, boat logistics, accommodation, photography, and how the entire day will actually feel.

Our goal is to create a day that feels like your own private experience of Lake Como, even when you're visiting one of the most famous destinations in Italy.

In this guide, we're sharing some of the best locations for a Lake Como elopement, the pros and cons of each, the best times of year to visit, and how we help our couples experience the lake without feeling like they're surrounded by tourists.

OUR TOP LOCATIONS FOR YOUR ELOPEMENT IN LAKE COMO

Varenna: Romantic, Intimate & Full of Italian Charm

If you're looking for a Lake Como village that feels romantic without being overly grand, Varenna is one of our favourites.

Located on the eastern shore of the lake, Varenna has a beautifully intimate atmosphere. There are narrow streets, colourful buildings, waterfront walks and beautiful views across the lake.

It feels like the Lake Como you imagined before you arrived.

Varenna is also particularly appealing for couples who want a combination of village atmosphere + beautiful gardens + lake views. The town has its own ferry connections, making it possible to incorporate other parts of the lake into your day without being tied to a car.

Why Choose Varenna For Your Elopement Photos?

The Pros:

Romantic and colorful Italian atmosphere

Beautiful lake views

Charming streets for photographs

Easy to combine with a private boat experience since the dock is in the city center

Wonderful option for couples who don't want their day to feel overly formal

Particularly lovely for couples who want a more relaxed Italian experience

Things to consider:

Varenna is still a very popular destination.

During the busiest parts of the day in summer, the streets and waterfront can become much busier than you might expect from photographs.

That's why timing is everything.

Instead of simply taking you to the most famous viewpoint at any time of day, we plan around the rhythm of the destination. We can build your photography and experience around quieter hours and less obvious corners, rather than following the same itinerary as every other visitor.

And this is where having a local team makes such a difference.

Tremezzo: The Classic Lake Como Experience - With an amazing FREE park for your ceremony

If your vision of a Lake Como elopement includes grand villas, beautiful gardens, elegant architecture and iconic lake views, Tremezzo and the surrounding western shore are hard to beat.

This part of the lake is home to some of the destination's most famous hotels and villas like the Grand Tremezzo Hotel - which is the perfect picturesque hotel for your lakeside and Italian photos.

Tremezzo is also a fantastic choice if you want your elopement to feel luxurious and editorial.

You could spend the morning getting ready at an elegant property, have an intimate ceremony in a garden, take portraits along the lake, and then leave by private boat.

Why Choose Tremezzo?

Pros:

Iconic Lake Como scenery

Beautiful historic villas and gardens

Excellent choice for a luxury aesthetic

Wonderful lake views

Great location for combining a villa experience with a private boat

Plenty of beautiful accommodation options

Things to consider

The biggest consideration is popularity.

Tremezzo does have some of the most iconic hotels in Lake Como, which means some of its famous locations can be busy during peak season.

There's also something important to know about the western shore when planning your photography.

The mountains can affect the light considerably, particularly later in the day. Even if your weather app says sunset is still an hour away, a location on the western shore may already be losing direct sunlight because of the surrounding mountains.

That's why we don't simply look at the official sunset time.

We plan around the actual light at your location.

Menaggio: Relaxed, Elegant & Less Formal

Menaggio offers a slightly different feeling.

Located on the western shore, it has an elegant lakeside atmosphere but feels more relaxed and lived-in than some of the lake's most famous tourist hotspots.

It's also surrounded by beautiful nature, with hiking and countryside experiences nearby.

For couples who want their Lake Como elopement to feel less like a traditional destination wedding and more like a romantic Italian adventure, Menaggio can be a wonderful choice.

Why choose Menaggio?

Pros:

More relaxed atmosphere

Beautiful waterfront

Great base for exploring

Elegant without feeling overly formal

Things to consider

Menaggio is still on the western side of the lake, so again, light needs to be considered carefully when planning your ceremony and portraits.

And while it may feel quieter than some of the most famous destinations, the wider lake becomes considerably busier during summer.

Our approach isn't to promise you that you won't see another person.

Instead we carefully plan your day so that other people don't become part of your experience.

Your Own Private Hotel Suite or Airbnb: The Intimate, Relaxed Option

One of our favourite options for an intimate Lake Como elopement is something couples sometimes overlook: Your own private accommodation.

Rather than booking a traditional wedding venue, you can rent a beautiful private home or apartment overlooking the lake and make that space part of your wedding day.

Imagine waking up together with the lake outside your window.

Having breakfast slowly. Getting ready without rushing. Opening a bottle of champagne. Reading your vows privately. Taking photographs around your own terrace or garden. Then leaving for the lake by private boat.

It's a completely different experience from spending the day moving between busy public locations.

Why Choose Your Airbnb or Hotel?

The Pros:

Complete privacy

No strangers wandering through your getting-ready space

A relaxed morning

Your own kitchen and living areas

Beautiful opportunities for getting-ready photographs

Can feel like you're spending the day at your own Italian home

Wonderful for couples who want a less traditional wedding experience

Things to Consider:

Not every beautiful Airbnb is suitable for an elopement.

A property may look incredible online but have restrictions around noise, outdoor music or additional guests.

Access can also be complicated. Some of the most beautiful properties are located on steep roads, have limited parking or are easier to reach by boat.

That's why we help our couples assess the property before building the entire day around it.

We look at things like:

Where the light falls

How private the terrace actually is

Where you can get ready

Where you can have your ceremony

Whether vendors can access the property

Whether photography is permitted

How you'll arrive and leave

Where we can go if the weather changes

The goal is to make your private accommodation feel like part of the experience, not just somewhere you happen to sleep.

A Private Villa: The Iconic Lake Como Elopement Experience

This is the option many couples picture when they imagine a luxury Lake Como elopement:

Your own private villa.

A private villa gives you the ability to create the day almost entirely around yourselves.

Instead of fitting your ceremony around the schedule of a public attraction, you're creating an environment where the property, the views and the experience are exclusively yours.

Why Choose One of the Famous Lake Como Villas?

The Pros:

Capture your day on the grounds of locations that are THE reason why Como became famous

Beautiful architecture and gardens

Dedicated space for getting ready

Ceremony and portraits can happen in the same location

Incredible lake views

Ideal for an intimate dinner afterwards

More control over styling

Excellent for couples who want a luxury experience

Things to Consider:

The biggest consideration is cost and availability.

Private villas can represent a significant investment, particularly if you're looking for a property with exceptional lake views, beautiful gardens, multiple bedrooms and event-friendly facilities.

There can also be waiting lists or time slots that limit you on when exactly you can be on the property.

And not every villa that looks like a dream wedding venue online is actually available for a two-person elopement.

This is another area where having someone local can save you a huge amount of time.

We are in contact with many of the villas and can help you find properties that actually make sense for the experience you're envisioning, rather than simply sending you a list of beautiful villas.

WHAT IS THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO ELOPE ON LAKE COMO?

Lake Como is beautiful throughout much of the year, but each season creates a very different experience.

And when you're planning an elopement, weather isn't the only consideration.

You also need to think about crowds, light, accommodation availability and what you want to do during the day.

Spring: April & May

Spring is one of the most beautiful times to experience Lake Como.

The gardens are beginning to come alive, the landscape is lush and the atmosphere can feel much calmer than in the middle of summer.

April and May generally bring mild temperatures, although spring is also changeable and rain is possible. Historical climate data for the area shows May can at times be one of the wetter months, so we always recommend having flexibility built into your timeline.

Best for:

Couples who love flowers, gardens, fresh greenery and a quieter atmosphere.

June: Warm, Green & Beautiful

June is a wonderful compromise.

The days are long, temperatures are warm, and the gardens are spectacular.

It's also when Lake Como starts feeling increasingly busy.

If you're considering June, we recommend booking your accommodation and key experiences well in advance.

Best for:

Couples who want warm weather and beautiful gardens without necessarily choosing the height of summer.

July & August: The Busiest But Absolutely Possible

Yes, Lake Como is busy in July and August.

And yes, some of the most famous places can be extremely crowded during the middle of the day.

But that doesn't mean you need to rule out a summer elopement.

Average July temperatures around the lake are around 28°C during the day, with warm evenings, while summer can also bring sudden afternoon thunderstorms.

The important thing is how your day is planned.

This is exactly where our team comes in.

We don't want you standing in a queue of tourists waiting to take your wedding photographs.

September: One of Our Favourite Months for a Lake Como Elopement

If you're flexible with your date, September is one of the first months we recommend considering.

You can still have that beautiful Italian summer feeling, but the intensity of July and August begins to ease.

The weather is generally comfortable, the lake is still beautiful, and the light becomes softer.

For couples who want the combination of warm weather + beautiful light + a more relaxed atmosphere, September can be a wonderful choice.

October: Romantic, Quiet & Atmospheric

October brings a different kind of beauty.

The temperatures become cooler, the landscape begins to change and the lake can feel much more peaceful.

It's a particularly lovely choice if your priority is privacy and atmosphere rather than guaranteed summer warmth.

As with spring, we recommend having some flexibility in your schedule because weather can be less predictable.

What Happens if it Rains?

Planning an outdoor Lake Como elopement doesn't mean crossing your fingers and hoping for sunshine.

Before your day, we create a realistic weather backup plan around your chosen location. If your ceremony is taking place in a public park or lakeside setting, we'll identify nearby sheltered options, alternative locations and ways to use your accommodation if needed.

And if the forecast shows a break in the rain? We'll use it.

Because you're eloping, we have something traditional weddings often don't: flexibility. We can wait for a weather window, move your ceremony by an hour, change locations or simply embrace the rain.

Light rain can create some of the most atmospheric photographs on Lake Como, misty mountains, reflections on the lake, quiet streets and the two of you under an umbrella.

If conditions become unsafe, we'll change the plan. No beautiful photograph is worth compromising your safety.

Our job isn't to promise you sunshine.

Our job is to make sure your elopement is beautiful whatever the weather gives us.

Pro Tip: While travel plans may not always be flexible, we do recommend staying in Como at least 2-3 days IF possible. This gives our team flexiblity to also change the date with you and make your day as amazing as it can be. However, we can only work within the date ranges of your travel schedule.

The Magic of a Private Lake Como Boat

All of our elopement packages include a private boat tour for photo and video. A private boat is one of our favourite ways to experience Lake Como, not simply because it's beautiful, but because it changes the entire feeling of the day.

When you're on your own boat, you're no longer worrying about crowds walking behind you.

You can move around the lake at your own pace.

You can stop for photographs.

You can take in the villas from the water.

You can have a quiet moment together without a crowd watching.

And, most importantly, the lake becomes the location.

The official Lake Como tourism site even notes that some of the hidden corners of the historic villas and gardens are best appreciated from the water.

We organise private boat experiences specifically for our couples, so your time on the water isn't just transportation from one location to another.

It's part of your elopement.

You can exchange vows, enjoy champagne, take portraits, explore different parts of the lake and simply have time together away from the crowds.

There is something incredibly special about standing on a boat in the middle of Lake Como, looking back at the mountains and villages, knowing that for that moment, it's just the two of you.

An All Inclusive elopement day is more than just pretty photos

We plan your day around:

Quieter times of day

Less obvious locations

Private gardens

Your accommodation

Private transportation

The actual position of the sun

Weather conditions

Your private boat experience

Backup options

Lake Como is a large destination, and the crowds aren't evenly distributed. Some of the most popular areas experience the greatest concentration of visitors, while quieter corners can feel completely different.
